sadly, this is and has been a part of the school experience since schools have existed - but that doesn't make it right.

it's a tough issue. tough for the victims to report it, tough for teacher's to see what is really happening - and tough for parents to trust the schools.

but if it's on school property, this is something teachers need to be empowered to handle.

They should be allowed to suspend trouble makers from their classrooms, and if necessary, from school. Student's coming near school property while suspended should be arrested and brought home.

THEN it's the parents' issue. And they should be civilly liable for bullying behaviour after that point.

there's my take.

Yes, it does get scary. I was just reading in the Sun where a girl has decided to leave school ( i think in the Toronto area) - it has really raised awareness.

We often think it is just 'boys being boys'. But it can happen to girls too.

It can lead to serious harm, i would not have a problem with some laws enacted to protect the students and teachers and holding parents accountable.

not everyone will agree with this, but my kids are taught to stick up for themselves, and that they don't have to win.

if teachers and other parents aren't keeping an eye on the bullies - it won't be my kids who are victimized, since the bully will know right away, they will fight back.

of course if one of them was coming home with signs of being picked on regularly - you can bet i would be in the face of the principal and the bully's family.
