From what I understand, the Petition started by Deb Pell is close to (or over) 3500 signatures.

As a percentage of voting adults, that comes close to being enough signatures to mandate a referendum (based on precedents in the US and Canada.

This issue is getting a lot of support, and a lot of coverage.

But when is a local politician going to be brave enough to take it up?

Any heroes around here?

Deb, do you honestly think that the train would ever come back to central Timmins? Or would y'all be content to have it come as far as Porcupine (yes, way out there in the east end)?

It isn't feasible to bring it back to central Timmins at all. Whereas the track is still in place to Porcupine and there is a piece of land that could be used for a new station (right where the old one was many moons ago).

Just my 2 cents worth

Porcupine is close enough!

Even if it is away from the homes a piece (having had relatives who live almost on the tracks once).

P.S. Porcupine = Timmins

Like many people are saying, they never should have removed the rail in the first place. But at the time, they were probably trying to force people to use the Air route more.

With 3 or 4 airlines operating out of the Timmins Airport now, including Air Canada Jazz, Bearskin, Air Creebec, there is NO LONGER ANY EXCUSE to not have rail.

Thousands have signed this petition. Imagine if they apporached city hall all at once. This issue should be taken seriously, and if you signed it, you should be calling your Mayor, your MP and MPP.

I have.

Happy to see discussion on this site. Regret not having chance to check it out earlier ?!?!?!

We're at the 4,000 mark for signatures!! Forwarded recent letter to editors of two papers here in Timmins which were printed last week to let pubic know of developments.

I've set a new deadline of May 31, 2009 for the first 5,000 signatures and will replace each petition I collect with a fresh one. Numerous individuals have requested petition packages and I expect them to start coming in soon. The public has been advised where they can sign via letters to editor.

Would be super if I could follow up the first submission of 5,000 signatures with another.

Thank you Chris for your super analysis of %'s, etc.

'til next time, Cheers! Deb

Sorry to reply so late. I'm way behind in my email and such.

Yes, many people think it would be great to go as far as Porcupine/South Porcupine. My dream, though, is to have both passenger and freight train circumvent the city (would stop those heavy transports chewing up the roads and dodging them in winter conditions, etc).

Thank you for your thoughts.

Cheers! Deb

4000 signatures? Wow, that's more than i would have thought.

I think that is enough to make a formal request for a meeting with those who can make decisions.

Has this been picked up by the bigger cities down south - news wise? Maybe Dalton McSquinty, should get a bundle with the signatures and a formal request that he address this.

We got the signatures - we need a hearing.

It's over 5000 now, I think that is enough to get things going.

Way to go Deb Pell!

I noticed on google street view, the old railroad tracks extending beyond the old back road crossing, they must dead end near the mine,,would it not be possible to repair those tracks. It would be nice to start a shortline railroad such as the Port Colborne Harbour Railroad near Niagara Falls , and run a train daily from Timmins to Porquis Junction.
